Sysadmins Don’t buy 3TB Seagate Hard Disks! – 3TB hard disk huge disk failure reports

Dont-buy-Seagate-3-TB-HDDs-or-you-will-have-big-problems-with-server-data-and-downtimes
Seagate Hard disks of 3 Terabyte volume used to be very attractive HDDs (storage) option when they were launched on the market.
Many people and sysadmins have already bought such ones and some sysadmins and company customers that already choose Seagate are badly suffering because of that and thus it is good to warn others to stay away from 3TB SeaGate Hard Disks.

Backblaze (Online Backup) company is one of the most severely affected companies that made the choise to use Seagate as a storage devices on their Cloud inter-connected servers. They used 41 213 hard disks in their computing Data Center as of 31 December 2014.

In their disk arrays they have used Western Digital (now part of Western DIgital) and of course pitily Seagate.

The problematic hard disks that they faced issues with are Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 3TB sized is the hard disks with most failures within Backblaze for whole 2014 about 40% percents!! of all 3TB hard disks the company had break up, died or had to be replaced because of I/O disk failures and bad-sectors.

It is not exactly clear what is the reason for such a high failures but Seagate were leaders in failures followed by Western Digital and HGTX (the ex-Hitachi).

Just for a comparison Backblaze reports that 4 Tetabyte hard disks which they bought last year had failures, very rarely and in general the company is quite happy with Seagate / WD disks of 4 TB volume.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 3TB disk drives mounted on their servers are the one who had most hardware issues and the company recommends anyone willing to buy a new HDD to stay away from this volume.

Western Digitals 3TB HDDs had 10% of failure rate, HGTS had only 2.6% and Seagate exact failed HDDs were approximately 43.1% with a HDD failure!!

No severe hardware HDD failures are reported with 4 TB hdds.
4TB Seagate HDDs gave 5% of defects, followed by WD with 3-4% and HGTS with only 1.4%.

Statistics clearly shows it if you want to buy a big storage for your big data / Web / FTP / Dropbox (Cloud) hosting Company as of time of writting 26.01.2015 it is better equip your Big Storage Array racks with HGTS branded hard drives.

How to See Load Avarage on Windows server with command line

I need to prepare a document called Operational Readiness Test (ORT) for a Windows server which will be going to production soon in that regards its necessery to fill-in the ORT document form the server load avarage. Here is how to get a Windows load avarage from command line:

C:\> wmic cpu get loadpercentage
LoadPercentage
1

alternative way to get Windows system load avarage data is with a short BAT for loop

C:\> @for /f “skip=1” %p in (‘wmic cpu get loadpercentage’) do @echo %p%
%p%
1%
%

That’s all now we have Windows Load Avarage. Note that this command should work on Windows 7 / 8 / Windows server 2012. Haven’t tested that on Windows XP and NT 4.0 but I guess it should be working too.

wmic command is very interesting one I advise you check out its complete help:
C:\> wmic /?

How to utilize better processor work on Linux server by disable CPU scaling – Make Linux server CPU work on full speed

how-to-utilize-better-linux-cpu-by-disabling-cpu-scaling-make-linux-server-cpu-work-on-full-speed
I’ve learned a very useful system administration tip on how to utilize processor work on a Linux server. By default in newer Linux kernel releases, there is ondemand CPU function enabled that makes use of multi-CPU processors only in case if the CPU is needed. On busy servers this on-demand practice is very bad practice, because often when ondemand is enabled CPU is working on a lower CPU rate than maximum (to save power) and used only when necessery and this is time consuming and affects performance.
To check whether ondemand “kernel feature” is making your CPU work by default on its maximum capacity:

uname -a;
Linux pcfreak 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Sep 23 11:00:33 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

ps ax| grep kondemand
182 ? S 0:00 [kondemand/0]
183 ? S 0:00 [kondemand/1]
184 ? S 0:00 [kondemand/2]
185 ? S 0:00 [kondemand/3]
186 ? S 0:00 [kondemand/4]

This processes are controlled by kernel and control ondemand for each server CPU.

grep -E ‘^model name|^cpu MHz’ /proc/cpuinfo
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
cpu MHz : 1596.000
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
cpu MHz : 1596.000

As you can see even though the CPU has capacity to run 2.40Ghz only 1.6Ghz are used meaning you’re wasing computing speed and even if used it is slower (not to mention that for dedicated servers saving power is not a priority of the sysadmin).

If ondemand is enabled for CPUs usually this
To disable CPU ondemand function use following one liner:

for CPUFREQ in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor; do [ -f $CPUFREQ ] || continue; echo -n performance > $CPUFREQ; done

To make the ondemand disabled permanent, quickest way is to add it to /etc/rc.local right before the exit 0

On CentOS Linux to stop ondemand support:

service cpuspeed stop

On RHEL and Oracle Unbreakable Linux:

lsmod | grep ondemand
cpufreq_ondemand 8764 0
freq_table 3751 2 cpufreq_ondemand,acpi_cpufreq
rmmod cpufreq_ondemand acpi_cpufreq freq_table

Any other services that control CPU stepping like ‘cpuspeed’, ‘cpufreqd’, ‘powerd’ should be disabled.

Web Wedevelopment basics – What is REST (Representational state transfer) and why it is important to programming?

web-development-basics-what-is-rest-protocol-used-to-communicate-server-client-via-http-rest-service-import-to-programming

Representational State Transfer (REST) has gained widespread acceptance across the Web as a simpler alternative to SOAP and WSDL based Web services. In layman’s terms, REST is an architecture style or design pattern used as a set of guidelines for creating web services which allow anything connected to a network (web servers, private intranets, smartphones, fitness bands, banking systems, traffic cameras, televisions etc.) to communicate with one another via a shared common common communications protocols known as HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP). The same HTTP Verbs (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE etc.) used by web browsers to retrieve and display web pages, audio/video files, images etc. from remote servers and post data back to them when performing actions like filling out and submitting forms are used by all of the aforementioned devices/services to communicate with one another.

rest-vs-soap-web-data-transfer-protocols
By leveraging and repurposing a lightweight and universal protocol like HTTP, software engineers and system architects are given a set of guidelines to use when designing RESTful web services for both new and existing products and services that contribute to what has become collectively known as the Internet of Things (IoT).

A simple example of designing a web service for managing employee data using an OData REST implementation might involve several methods, each corresponding to one of the HTTP verbs. A method like “Employees/GetEmployees” would be mapped to the GET verb (or “Employees/GetEmployee/12345” in the case of retrieving details for a single specific employee), handling all requests submitted to the web service, “Employees/AddEmployee” would be mapped to the POST verb, “Employees/UpdateEmployee” would be mapped to PUT and “Employees/DeleteEmployee” would be mapped to the DELETE verb. If the service were also exposing an interface to allow remote clients to manage consumer products the API would follow a similar naming convention but obviously specific to consumer products (i.e. Products/GetProducts, Products/AddProduct etc.). Any remote client that has access and is authorized to use any of these methods would be able to execute them provided that the remote client is capable of sending and receiving data using the HTTP protocol.

Technically speaking, it is an abstraction of the architecture of the World Wide Web (WWW); more precisely, REST is an architectural style consisting of a coordinated set of architectural constraints applied to components, connectors, and data elements, within a distributedhypermedia system. REST ignores the details of component implementation and protocol syntax in order to focus on the roles of components, the constraints upon their interaction with other components, and their interpretation of significant data elements.

The REST architectural style is also applied to the development of web services. One can characterize web services as “RESTful” if they conform to the constraints described in the architectural constraints section. RESTful web services are assumed to return data in XML and/or JSON format, the latter of which has been gaining more and more support and seems to be the data format of choice for many of the newer REST implementations.

Install Creative labs webcam live vf0220 on Windows 7 driver working howto

creative-webcam-live-vf0220-im install on windows 7 howto
1) Download the original drivers from the Creative Support website:

this should be the support page for the webcam… Creative Worldwide Support > Live! Cam Video IM (VF0220)

and this should be a direct link to the file you need to download under the voice “Creative Live! Cam Video IM (VF0220) Driver v1.03.02” the file downloaded should be “LCVM_PCDRV_US_1_03_02.exe
Creative Worldwide Support

2) You need to download a copy of Universal Extractor from here: Universal Extractor | LegRoom.net

get the installer or the binary if you just want a portable version that doesn’t need to be installed.
I personally use the binaries so i don’t have to install anything, but if you like to have some context menu features then you may opt for the installer.

3) Use Universal Extractor to decompress the content of the driver you just downloaded “LCVM_PCDRV_US_1_03_02.exe“.
Uniextractor should ask you for the source file to extract, a destination where to decompress the file and to continue it will prompt which extraction method to use.
This time choose ‘Not an InstallShield installer’ option and click ok.
If everything went well, you should have the following files in the location you specified before:

ct_cabinfo.ini
ct_cabinfo.txt
ct_cabinfo.xml
LCVM_PCDRV_US_1_03_02.EXE

I installed the driver and application and both work on windows 7. LCVM_PCDRV_US_1_03_02.exe.
LCC_PCAPP_LA_2_02_05.exe.

Here it is important to change compatability options to make it working on Windows 7.
a. Get both files from creative labs (vista compatible).

b. Go to the folder where you downloaded them to.

c. Right click each file in turn and select troubleshoot compatibility.

d. Select troubleshoot program

e. Select,The program worked in earlier versions of windows.

6.Select Windows Vista(Service pack 2)
4) Now we need to use Universal Extractor for a second time on this extracter executable, but this time we will choose another Extract Method.
So apply Universal Extractor to the extracted “LCVM_PCDRV_US_1_03_02.exe” file; choose a destination folder and when prompted for the Extraction Method this time select ‘E_Wise Unpacker‘.
You should end up with two extracted folders; one MAINDIR folder and a TEMP one.
In the MAINDIR folder you should now have the driver setup files.

5) What we need to do right now is to modify the content of some of this files so that we tell Windows 7 that they are compatible with it’s drivers standard.
In particular we will have to change the following three .ini files:

CtDrvStp.ini
CtSetupX.ini
V0220Dev.inf

Simply edit them with Notepad and change the following lines

[Version]
Signature =”$Windows NT$”

with this new signature

[Version]
Signature =”$Chicago$”

Be sure to change it in all 3 files and now you should be finally be able to install the drivers correctly.
Get ready to resurrect your beloved webcam.
Double click CtDrvStp.exe and good luck!

It worked for me…

What is the real job of most people nowadays who work with computers – Sad but True fact :)

what-is-current-it-professionals-real-job-diagram
Its amazingly what kind of world, we’re living nowadays the definition from knowledge is starting to blur, as nowone doesn’t have the physical time resource to learn and capacity to digest all the information.
The advent of Search Engines changed dramatically how we Work, Play and Relax.
The amount of information explosion is hitting us badly the more information, we have the more we want so we end up in a nuclear reaction chain-like process a tendency not likely to over except if there is no a cataclysm or a world war.

Man’s way of fixing things has changed, as even the most knowledgable on a certain topic or profession, have a lot of gap knowledges filled up by someone else on earth, who might have shared it already Online in Google.
The increase of Searching on the Internet for a solutions, made us certainly much more passive and more of a consumers than producers and sadly this is not of the best things to happen to us over the last 20 centuries.

In IT professions above diagram is more is even more adequate, as we’re totally dependent on Googling, to do even basic daily sysadmin / programmer work. There is even a whole generation of .NET programmers (who can’t really program but rely heavily on copy pasting assembling to come up with Companies Software production), in system administration job field situation is also similar, as many of the errors we get from services / applications are not existent in official documentation but experienced by someone else who suggested solution.

With the increase of use of Internet Search engine use and information we have to interpret daily, our mind advanced his capability to forget, because our brains are overfilled with information. That’s why often even though we have red a lot online, we can’t remember hardly anything. In short future this could bring us in a situation, where we will need Google embedded access traight into our brains – this is a science fiction now but in short future there is high chance for this to happen (it could be that is why the Bible prophet st. John tells us in Bible’s last chapter Apocalypsis that the Anti-Christ will set a mark to everyone, it is my guess that the mark on the forehead could be even an implant allowing the user to access the internet from anywhere through a virtual interface (chip) to project objects straight into humans head).

How to see What Google knows about you – Google Dashboard and Google Ads Settings

Everyone knows about disclosures of Edward Snowden against hidden surveillance (spy) program PRISM that is taking place all across the Internet, messages, mobile phones and cameras are being logged and profiles of people are being created.

For anyone involved into IT field (Geeks, Hackers, Programmers) it was clear that such a mass spy is being conducted this is why many hackers like Richard Stallman decided to not use mobile phones and non-free software (which is another Troyan horse) for America and world governments.
Every intelligent person has already understood that the reason for this surveillance is the creation of online electronic file of every person on earth.

Most likely Big companies like Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Yahoo all were financed by National Security Agency(NSA) in order to be able to collect as much information as possible for global citizens.
Modern technology was purposely invented and spread as a mean to not only track human behaviors but also to speed-up Globalism and fostering of a global society.

We already know that anyone having an Android smartphone is a holding a personal tracking and reporting device to Google, anyone using Youtube is also reporting on his watching preferences to.
Anyone with Android if logged to Google Play often unknowingly shares and imports his pictures into Google Picasa.

Anyone having a Gmail Mail account shares his personal email correspondence with the Giant. Google books reports on us, Google even keeps tracks of our searches (if we’re logged in to some type of Google Account which until recently become Universal (e.g. One login for all). It is rather scary to know exactly how much google knows about every citizen on planet who uses the internet …

There are already Two Google interfaces which allows to see in a very basic way some of the things Google knows about us.
And even the little to see raises a serious concern about our personal privacy …
