  Българската дума църква произхожда от старобългарската дума црькы, произлязла от праславянската *сьrky. Тя от своя страна е заемка от старовисоконемската дума chirihha, произлязла от старогръцката κυριακόν. На български език се употребяват и дублетните черква и черкова.
